In this guide, we’ll delve into the timelines for replacing various skincare items, from cleansers to SPF, to ensure you’re getting the most out of your routine.
1. Toners: Toners, the essential first step after cleansing, such as the Skin Balancing Toner or Toning Gel usually last around 6 months once opened. Toners have one of the shorter POAs, so why not use this as an opportunity to change out your toner often, for your changing skin needs, depending on season or other factors. In the Winter, try a more Hydrating toner, such as the Nutrient Toner, and in the Summer, try a refreshing toner such as the Cryogenic Activator or D:O₂ Activator.
2. Cleansers: Cleansers, including oil-based cleansers such as the Double Makeup Remover or water-based foaming cleansers such as the Pore Mask, should be replaced after 6-12 months. With consistent use of a regular sized cleanser, most people will finish a cleanser after around 3 months, however if you like to switch up your skincare routine more often, don’t forget to keep track of how long each cleanser has been open.
3. Moisturizers: Moisturizers generally have a shelf life of 6-12 months. If you use moisturizer in a tube, such as the Skin Barrier Ato Cream it is relatively easy to keep it clean, however, if you use a moisturizer or cream from a pot or tub, such as the HA Gel or Caviar Cream, it is essential to always use clean hands, or ever better a clean tool such as a spatula, to remove the product from the pot.
4. Ampoules and Serums: These tend to be more potent and may have a shorter shelf life compared to other skincare products. Typically, they last around 6-12 months, however this will depend on the exact formula and any active ingredients. Many of these formulas are packaged with a dropper bottle, such as our Fluids, and it is important to remember to avoid touching the dropper to your skin, to prevent any contamination.
5. SPF (Sunscreens): Sunblock is a daily essential for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays, to avoid signs of aging and sun damage. It is also important to know the difference between Period After Opening (PAO) and expiry date. The little open jar symbol on many cosmetic products is the PAO (Period After Opening) symbol. This tells you how long cosmetics will stay good after the product is unsealed. The expiry date tells you when the product will no longer be good, even if it has been unopened.
