[OxygenCeuticals] Spring Clean Your Skincare Collection

In the realm of skincare, consistency is key. However, there comes a time when even the most beloved products need to be replaced. Knowing when to say Goodbye to your skincare essentials is crucial for maintaining healthy, radiant skin. Over time, products not only lose their effectiveness, but using expired products in some cases can even cause irritation and long-term skin damage, especially in the case of SPF.

In this guide, we’ll delve into the timelines for replacing various skincare items, from cleansers to SPF, to ensure you’re getting the most out of your routine.

1. Toners: Toners, the essential first step after cleansing, such as the Skin Balancing Toner or Toning Gel usually last around 6 months once opened. Toners have one of the shorter POAs, so why not use this as an opportunity to change out your toner often, for your changing skin needs, depending on season or other factors. In the Winter, try a more Hydrating toner, such as the Nutrient Toner, and in the Summer, try a refreshing toner such as the Cryogenic Activator or D:O₂ Activator.

2. Cleansers: Cleansers, including oil-based cleansers such as the Double Makeup Remover or water-based foaming cleansers such as the Pore Mask, should be replaced after 6-12 months. With consistent use of a regular sized cleanser, most people will finish a cleanser after around 3 months, however if you like to switch up your skincare routine more often, don’t forget to keep track of how long each cleanser has been open.

3. Moisturizers: Moisturizers generally have a shelf life of 6-12 months. If you use moisturizer in a tube, such as the Skin Barrier Ato Cream it is relatively easy to keep it clean, however, if you use a moisturizer or cream from a pot or tub, such as the HA Gel or Caviar Cream, it is essential to always use clean hands, or ever better a clean tool such as a spatula, to remove the product from the pot.

4. Ampoules and Serums: These tend to be more potent and may have a shorter shelf life compared to other skincare products. Typically, they last around 6-12 months, however this will depend on the exact formula and any active ingredients. Many of these formulas are packaged with a dropper bottle, such as our Fluids, and it is important to remember to avoid touching the dropper to your skin, to prevent any contamination.

5. SPF (Sunscreens): Sunblock is a daily essential for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays, to avoid signs of aging and sun damage. It is recommend to wear SPF 50, and whether you use regular sunscreen, such as the Leport’s Sunblock or TP Sun Cream, or makeup products containing SPF, such as the Intensive Blemish Balm or the O2 Cushion, it is essential to reapply throughout the day. Most sunscreens last around 1-2 years if stored properly and unopened. Once opened, they should be replaced every 6-12 months, as their effectiveness can decrease over time.

6. Products containing AHA/BHA/LHA: These products are often used to exfoliate the skin, such as the Double Peel and ReGenon Fill LHA, and they typically have a shelf life of 12 months.

7. Body Products: Body washes, lotions, creams, and oils last slightly longer than many facial products, usually around 1-2 years. This includes products such as the Jojoba Oil, Body and Hand Lotion and our Treatment Oils.

Whilst these time periods mentioned above are guidelines, some products may need to be replaced more or less often. It is important to pay attention to any changes in texture, scent, color or consistency of your skincare, as these can be good signs that it is time to replace your product.

It is also important to know the difference between Period After Opening (PAO) and expiry date. The little open jar symbol on many cosmetic products is the PAO (Period After Opening) symbol. This tells you how long cosmetics will stay good after the product is unsealed. The expiry date tells you when the product will no longer be good, even if it has been unopened.

General Tips for Skincare Product Maintenance:

  • Store products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prolong their shelf life.
  • Avoid contaminating products by using clean hands or tools when applying them.
  • Check expiration dates and PAO to ensure the freshness of your skincare products.
  • If you experience any adverse reactions or changes in your skin while using a product, discontinue use and consult a dermatologist.

While skincare products can work wonders for your skin, they do have a finite lifespan. By staying vigilant and replacing products when required, you can ensure that your skincare routine remains effective and your skin stays healthy and glowing.
